Confucius Institute at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Since 2009, Confucius Institute at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania (hereinafter referred to as Confucius Institute, Cluj) aims at promoting Chinese language and culture in the Transylvania, Romania. At present, the Chinese language education of Confucius Institute, Cluj has covered 10 cities at 6 provinces in Transylvania.
Confucius Institute, Cluj has 22 staff members, including 3 Romanian. It has 4 affiliated Confucius Classrooms and 33 partner schools (including universities, primary and secondaryschools, and kindergartens). According to the statistics from 2017, Confucius Institute, Cluj has 2723 students and 176 various kinds of classes and 445 students have participated in HSK and HSKK.
Chinese Language Teaching
Confucius Institute, Cluj pays great attention to Chinese language teaching. It opens a variety of Chinese major courses both in Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca and “Vasile Goldis” Western University of Arad. Besides, it opens Chinese language minorsBabes-Bolyai University according to practical situation of higher education in Romania. The number of Chinese major and minor students has reached up to 188 in 2017. What’s more, Confucius Institute, Cluj not only has Chinese classes in secondary schools and primary schools, but also some language and culture courses for adults.
In 2017, the Confucius Institute, Cluj has organized 35 cultural events, exhibitions and lectures for different groups of people, including: Cluj Story-telling Festival, Spring Festival Gala, Confucius Institute Day activities, primary and secondary school Autumn Fair activities, tea culture festival, China Go Competition, Chinese Character Competition, Cluj City Week, Multicultural Week, Arad City Week, Photo Exhibition, Tai Chi Day Events. In order to allow more primary and secondary school students to understand China, the Confucius Institute at Cluj will also invite students to visit Confucius Institutes every semester and introduce an open class for students to introduce China's economic and social development. In addition, the Confucius Institute regularly organizes various lectures on Chinese cities, traditional Chinese festivals, Chinese education system. In particular, we give a lecture about Chinese higher education system and various scholarship policies for high school students.
Scholarship Students Recommendation
In order to make Romanian students truly understand China, Confucius Institute, Cluj recommends them to apply for Confucius Institute scholarships and Chinese government scholarships. In 2017, 6 one-semester Confucius Institute Scholarship students, 12 one-year scholarship students, and 2 Masters degree Scholarships students were recommended. In addition, we also recommended 2 Chinese government scholarship students to study in China.
Chinese Language Incorporating into the National Education System
So far, after many rounds of negotiation with local government education organization, Chinese language is introduced into the formal curriculum in 2 secondary schools in Baia Mare as a second foreign language to enjoy the same rights as German, French, Spanish and Italian.
